Frequently Asked Questions
Welcome to the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) page of the EAC Trans Fat Free campaign, where we address common inquiries about trans fatty acids (TFAs), cardiovascular health, and our advocacy efforts towards TFA elimination. Here, you’ll find answers to key questions to help deepen your understanding and guide you in making informed decisions about your health and well-being.
Trans fatty acids (TFAs) are unsaturated fats that can have detrimental effects on cardiovascular health. They are commonly found in partially hydrogenated oils used in processed foods. TFAs can raise “bad” cholesterol levels (LDL cholesterol) and lower “good” cholesterol levels (HDL cholesterol), increasing the risk of heart disease, stroke, and other cardiovascular conditions
TFAs are often present in commercially baked goods, fried foods, snack foods, margarine, and some packaged foods. They can also be found in certain cooking oils and spreads. Checking ingredient labels for terms like “partially hydrogenated oils” can help identify foods that may contain TFAs
Consuming TFAs can contribute to the development of heart disease, stroke, and other cardiovascular conditions. They can increase levels of LDL cholesterol while decreasing levels of HDL cholesterol, leading to plaque buildup in the arteries and impaired blood flow. Additionally, TFAs may also increase inflammation and contribute to insulin resistance.
The EAC Trans Fat Free campaign is actively engaged in advocacy efforts aimed at promoting heart health and advocating for the elimination of TFAs from the food supply within the East African Community (EAC). We collaborate with policymakers, healthcare professionals, and advocacy groups to raise awareness, shape policies, and drive meaningful change towards TFA elimination.
To reduce TFA consumption, opt for whole, unprocessed foods whenever possible. Choose foods cooked with healthier oils like olive oil or canola oil and limit consumption of commercially baked goods and fried foods. Reading food labels and avoiding products containing partially hydrogenated oils can also help reduce TFA intake.
